After a kidney transplant, diet still plays a major role in the patient's well-being. Patients who were previously on dialysis may find that their post-transplant diet is easier to follow than the diet they were prescribed during dialysis, though the postoperative diet for a kidney transplant recipient may be affected by the use of necessary anti-rejection medications. It is also likely that diet recommendations will change from the first days after a transplant to month or years later. Most transplant recipients need to monitor their intake of cholesterol, fiber, and sodium; and need to be aware of the way that their medications may interact with certain foods. Every patient is different, however, and pre-existing conditions may require further dietary consideration. It is always important to speak with a doctor and a dietitian to craft a healthy, personalized eating program.
