Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgery in which a telescopic rod with a camera- called a laparoscope- is inserted into the body through a small puncture, measuring about an inch long. Surgical instruments are inserted into additional punctures in the abdomen, and the surgeon performs the operation while watching a video monitor. This type of procedure has better postoperative benefits compared to conventional surgery, as there is typically less postoperative pain, a faster recovery, and better cosmetic results.
