There are two types of kidney donation: living donor, where the kidney is donated by a family member, friend or Good Samaritan; and cadaveric, where the kidney is provided by a deceased person who agreed to be an organ donor. In a living donor transplant, the procedure is scheduled in advance. The donor and recipient surgeries happen simultaneously, usually in adjacent operating rooms. If a recipient is on the waiting list for a cadaveric organ, he or she must be ready to rush to the hospital as soon as a matching kidney becomes available.
