Before a kidney transplant is performed, extensive testing and evaluation is done. This is to ensure proper matching between the recipient and the organ as well as to decrease the risk of post-transplant complications. Prior to being put on a transplant waiting list, a patient usually undergoes the following evaluations: medical history, physical examination, lab tests, blood type, tissue type, chest x-ray and electrocardiogram (EKG). Some patients may require further testing, dependent on age and co-morbidities. People with diabetes and/or previous heart conditions or symptoms may need a heart evaluation. Men need a prostate exam, and women need a Pap Smear exam if they haven't done so within a year. Also, good oral hygiene is important, and if problems exist, they need to be corrected by a dentist.
