HEMOGLOBIN AND HEMATOCRIT

Hemoglobin is an iron-rich protein in the red blood cells that is responsible for the delivery of oxygen to the tissues. Hematocrit is a percentage of red blood cells, by volume, found in whole blood. Normal hematocrit results may vary, but in general are as follows: Males: 41 - 50% Females: 36 - 44%. Low hematocrit might be due to anemia, blood loss, bone marrow failure, destruction of red blood cells, leukemia, dietary deficiencies, multiple myeloma or other causes.
